TOURS RUN MARCH-OCTOBER

Visit two awe-inspiring monuments of prehistoric Britain.

Stonehenge is one of the most famous monuments of prehistory. Construction of the stone circle began 4500 years ago but by then it was already a place of ancient traditions. Come and discover how it and the entire complex around it evolved.

Avebury dwarves Stonehenge. It is home to the world's largest stone circle which forms part of a huge complex of prehistoric monuments, some considerably older than Stonehenge itself. Compared to its more famous neighbour of Stonehenge, Avebury is a quieter, more spiritual retreat.

NEXT TOUR DATE: 29th August 2026

PLAN FOR THE DAY

0800 We depart from central Cambridge on our journey around London and then west towards Avebury.

1045 Before heading to the Avebury complex we will stop in the picturesque market town of Marlborough. Time for an uplifting coffee in a quaint cafe, a stroll along the pretty high street with its boutique shops, and, if you haven't brought lunch with you, the chance to pick up something to eat later on.

1130 We depart to make the short journey to Avebury. Like Stonehenge, Avebury is a World Heritage Site. It is a complex of monuments that include the West Kennet Long Barrow, a 6000-year-old tomb that we can enter, Silbury Hill, Europe's largest man-made prehistoric hill, and, of course, the stone circle itself. Unlike at Stonehenge, there are no limits to touching the stones at Avebury, walking among them and also around the enormous earth bank that envelops the circle.

We will then have time to visit the wonderful souvenir shop in Avebury village that sells a wide range of clothes, books, musical instruments, crystals, handicrafts and other products that appeal to the spiritual and more inquisitive traveller fascinated in ancient folklore.

1400  Depart Avebury for the pretty journey to Stonehenge.

1500 On arrival, join your guide for a tour of the site. Stand in front of the stone circle and marvel at its majesty. Discover all about Stonehenge including the latest theories about the monument, then there will be free time for you to explore the site and view the exhibition in the Visitor Centre.

1715 We depart from Stonehenge for the journey back home to Cambridge.

2000 Arrive back in central Cambridge.

Please note: We visit Stonehenge & Avebury regularly and have witnessed them in all weathers. Undoubtedly, sunshine is best but they are probably at their most eerily atmospheric in fog.  Whatever the weather, they will leave a lasting impression! However, the weather can change quickly so please check the forecast and come prepared for any weather. Please wear shoes suitable for walking on rough grassland.
