TOURS RUN ALL YEAR ROUND

Britain's Spectacular Coast

This tour visits Britain's premier seaside resort of Brighton and the stunning white chalk cliffs of England's south coast at Beachy Head.

200 years ago Brighton was the fashionable retreat for royalty and the rich London elite. The Prince Regent built his extraordinary seaside palace, The Royal Pavilion, in the heart of the city. 1960s youth culture reinvigorated the city and today it is an entertaining, bohemian town with grand buildings, a vibrant atmosphere, bustling shopping streets and a wonderful pebble beach.

Beachy Head is the highest cliff on England's south coast towering over The Channel below. Behind is the rolling land of the South Downs National Park with expansive views along the spectacular coastline of the Seven Sisters Country Park to Brighton. Enjoy the crashing waves, the pebble beach and, if the tide is out, the rockpools below.

NEXT TOUR DATE: 16th February 2025

PLAN FOR THE DAY

0800 We depart from Cambridge for the south coast. The journey takes us to the east of London, across the River Thames and into 'The Garden of England', the county of Kent. We stop for a comfort break before continuing our journey over the wooded hills of The Weald and down to the coast at Eastbourne. It's a steep climb up from there to the clifftop at Beachy Head.

1100 If the weather is good, we walk for an hour along the cliffs from Beachy Head down to the beach at Birling Gap. It's an easy walk, mostly on grass and almost all downhill! Time for some beachcombing, browsing the exhibition at the Visitor Centre, or resting with a coffee and cake in the cafe.

1300 It's off to Brighton, along the coast road through quaint villages, seaside resorts and small coastal ports.

1345 On arrival in Brighton there will be free time for lunch. What better place to try the British favourite, fish and chips! Head over to Brighton Pier for a stroll through the amusement arcades and great views back to the city from the sea.

During the afternoon explore the seafront, The Lanes, a labyrinth of narrow streets of antique and jewellery shops, and the Prince Regent's bizarre Royal Pavilion. Time to enter the Pavilion if you wish or head over to North Laine, the bohemian part of the city with its unique, independent shops and bustling cafes.

1730 Depart from Madeira Drive in Brighton. The bus will arrive a few minutes before departure. Please arrive on time as the bus cannot wait for long.

2000 Arrive back in Cambridge.
