York,
the old capital of north England, is one of the most important
cities in British history and has been at the forefront
of Britain's cultural development ever since the Romans,
Vikings and Normans all contributed to its rich heritage.
The city is famous for its walled city centre enclosing
a maze of narrow medieval
streets, such as The
Shambles, housing wonderful shops and tourist attractions.
February trips may coincide with the yearly Viking Festival
when the city comes to life with all things Viking. But
don't miss the city's other major attractions: York
Minster, voted Britain's favourite cathedral, is
the second most important cathedral in England and the seat
of the Archbishop of York; Experience
Viking life at the Jorvik Viking Centre; The
National
Railway Museum,
Britain's premier museum of the railways; Clifford's
Tower, York's Norman castle; and views over the
city from the York
Eye.
