PLAN FOR THE DAY
0800 We depart from central Cambridge on our journey around the west of London and south-west to Salisbury. There will be a comfort break in the journey.
1100 On arrival in Salisbury there will be time to enter the cathedral, browse the city centre's historic streets and pick up lunch (and some energy!) for an afternoon in the English countryside.
1300 Depart Salisbury for the short journey uphill on to Salisbury Plain and to the famous stone circle of Stonehenge.
1315 On arrival, join your guide for a tour of the site. Stand in front of the stone circle and marvel at its majesty. Discover all about Stonehenge including the latest theories about the monument, then there will be free time for you to explore the site, browse the souvenir shop and view the exhibition in the Visitor Centre.
1515 We depart from Stonehenge for the journey along the River Avon valley to Avebury, through rolling farmland and pretty villages and past one of the famous Wiltshire white horse images etched into the landscape.
1600 Avebury village stands at the centre of a complex of prehistoric monuments, and we head to its centre, to the largest stone circle in Britain. Unlike at Stonehenge, there are no limits to touching the stonesat Avebury, so we walk amongst the stones and around the enormous earth bank that envelops the circle.
1730 As we depart for the journey back to Cambridge, we drive by the remarkable Silbury Hill, the world's largest man-made prehistoric hill, and through the ancient and attractive market town of Marlborough before hitting the fast road home.
2000 Arrive back in central Cambridge.
Please note: We visit Stonehenge regularly and have witnessed it in all weathers. Undoubtedly, experiencing it in sunshine is best but it is probably at its most eerily atmospheric in fog. Whatever the weather, Stonehenge impresses. However, the weather can change quickly so please check the forecast and come prepared for any weather. Please wear shoes suitable for walking on rough grassland.
