is the capital and largest city of the province of West Flanders
in the Flemish Region of Belgium and, because of its extensive
canal network, is sometimes referred to as 'The Venice of
the North'. In the Middle Ages Bruges became an important
wool and cloth trading city and later a producer of lace.
The historic centre of Bruges is a UNESCO World Heritage Site
due to the continuing existence of its medieval architecture. |
